Kugonza Joyce's Story

The client is a 58year old business woman residing in Zzana Lufuka zone. She is currently a widow after losing her husband in 2018. The client joined ECLOF in 2016 with a major purpose of improving her rentals so that they can generate more income on a monthly basis

The client has so far borrowed nine (9) loans with ECLOF all of them being 10,000,000/= per cycle and paying very well. She has continuously renovated her rentals and constructed more to increase her monthly incomes. Currently she has twenty-six (26) rental units from fifteen (15) which she previously had in Zzana and they are all fully occupied. Her rentals have continued to be boosted by civil servants who work within the same locality and pay her at the end of the month from salary.

During COVID 19 lockdown, she was much affected because most of her tenants were not working therefore could not make monthly rent payments. This taught her to diversify and put up a retail shop selling general merchandise. This earns her daily income.

Reasons for choosing ECLOF

  1. Flexible payment mode i.e. She pays using Stanbic bank because it has a branch near her home.
  2. Quick Top up loans as and when need arises.
  3. Low turnaround time for her loan applications
  4. Low interest rate compared to competition in the market.

Benefits that the client has acquired

  1. Increased incomes. Currently the client has twenty six (26) rentals which give her monthly income of Ugx.8,000,000/=.
  2. Provision of decent and affordable housing to the people in her village.
  3. Prompt payments of her children's school fees due to increased incomes.

Challenges that the client faces

Delayed payments by the tenants in certain months. (COVID 19 Lockdown was a trying moment since most tenants were not working therefore not paying). This was solved by diversifying incomes through putting up a retail shop to boost the daily incomes.

Non - financial services that Eclof has provided include the following

  1. Technical assistance on how to document her monthly incomes. Maintaining rental receipts for easy accountability.
  2. Accountability on how to pay rental tax.
